Public Media Collaborative

Our Mission: Education, action, community-use media & technology to build democracy and empower local and virtual communities.

The Public Media Collaborative brings passionate connectors from different disciplines together to educate one another, discuss issues and ideas, and plan and take action on social action projects to benefit local communities, non-profits, and grassroots movements.

Inclusive, yet focused, PMC strives to be a resource and umbrella for Bay area organizations and individuals, bring people together across disciplines and out of their silos, yet united in agreement that community, discourse, vision and action power positive social change.

We hope to be a model for social change collaboratives in other areas, and seek to partner with other groups.

What we do:

PMC’s monthly meetings bring together bloggers, journalists, technologists, media & environmental justice folks, community organizers & activists from around the Bay area to explore and discuss social justice and emerging technology issues in a way that links theory and practice.

Each meeting includes one or more brief presentations, interactive discussion, and a check in on volunteer programs and projects planned or in development.

In addition, PMC members collaborate with one another and with other individuals and organizations to organize and run programs than empower communities and non-profits, including Social Media Tupperware Parties(SMTPs) and PublicMediaBarCamps

Why does this matter? Do I need yet another organization to belong to?

Most of us are siloed. We have our friends, our colleagues, our networks, our perspectives. Public Media Collaborative creates opportunities to meet and engage across disciplines and progressive perspectives. Stimulating discussion leads to focused, positive action—and empowering change.

Who is this for?

Technologists, bloggers, journalists, activists, community organizers, non profit program managers, social & environmental justice workers—we seek participants from multiple disciplines who believe that cross-disciplinary discourse and action can drive positive change and want to play a role in making that happen.
